GENERAL INFORMATION

HOME

I am in the process of writing a patent application. As soon as the application is filed the operation and design of the unit become public knowledge. Until then it would be difficult for me to describe very much about how it works. But I can describe the effect the device generates.
The Invention
A device used to generate waves in an aquarium or other body of confined water. This wave generator is unlike any other available. It is able to actually generate waves in the aquarium. The waves are periodic. The water rhythmically cycles back and forth in the aquarium.

Benefits
This motion is very much like that generated in the Ocean (this is an example of where you might want to agree, disagree or ask for proof that the waves are like those in the ocean). I hope to have experts evaluate the water movement generated by the unit and include their comments and criticisms here.

The water motion generated greatly aides in suspending particulates in the water column. Keeps food particles suspended in the water column where they can be more easily captured. This enhances the ability of marine invertebrates to capture prey in the water column. Increases the overall flow in the aquarium thus keeping waste products from accumulating in low flow areas. Improves the ability of filtration systems to remove particulates from the water.

It is an ideal match for larger (48 to 96" long) aquaria.

Drawbacks
Need to determine if any reinforcement of the aquarium is required because of the amount of water movement that the unit generates. (The jury is still out on this one. While the consensus is, that the water motion should not cause any problems, no one has been able to offer any formula or method of determining the amount, if any, of reinforcement needed.)

The amount of water movement does not lend itself to most already-established aquariums. Although the amount of movement produced by the wave generator can be controlled, it could easily cause the water to slosh out of most established aquaria.

With the exception of hobbyist’s looking for a DIY project, this device would be difficult to retrofit to an existing aquarium that has already been established. There is a concern that the water movement would actually increase the risk of corals and/or rocks toppling over in the aquarium.
